Type Strain Depository

The nomenclatural strain depository is for researchers publishing a valid description regarding the type of a species or subspecies.

We are a recognized culture collection in the United States and a member of the World Directory of Culture Collections (Sixth Version, 2014). We accept type strains and provide the documentation required for publication. We will perform viability testing, provide a Certificate of Deposit, apply for any necessary import permits, and ensure availability of the type strain for requesting organizations. A type strain may be provided from the stock initially provided by the depositor or as an ATCC branded strain manufactured and authenticated by us. Full inclusion as an ATCC branded strain will depend upon the scientific relevance of the material.

Why do I have to submit my material to a Collection Center?

It is a requirement of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology (IJSEM), published by the Society for General Microbiology (SGM), and the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes (ICSP) that authors of new names and new combinations provide evidence that types are deposited in two recognized collections in two different countries. Papers will not be accepted until such documentation has been received by the editor of these journals. Further information on the requirements for publication can be found in IJSEM Information for Authors.
