Design a smarter experiment. The value of tumor cell lines, as research models and drug discovery tools, is greatly enhanced when there is an understanding of the underlying genetic abnormalities that drive their phenotype.
ATCC has designed virtual1 tumor cell panels based on the tissue of tumor origin. Each cell line is further annotated with details regarding known mutations2 in select oncogenes and/or receptors. The application of this data, combined with the size and scope of the ATCC tumor cell line collection, enables more intelligent choices when selecting cell-based research models. These pre-selected panels are powerful tools to accelerate your discoveries in cancer research, drug discovery, compound screening, biomarker selection, pathway analysis and targeted therapeutic development.

Gene Mutation Lists for Cell Lines
ATCC has created gene mutation lists based on the ATCC tumor cell line collection and known mutation information maintained in the Sanger Institute COSMIC database2. These references should provide useful information for researchers using cell based models.
Click on the gene name to obtain a .PDF document that lists all of the cell lines in the ATCC collection that carry a known mutation in that gene.
1A virtual tumor cell panel provides the convenience of ordering multiple cell lines under the umbrella of a single catalog number. Virtual cell line panels are composed of individual cell lines, shipped simultaneously, but without unified packaging or product sheet. The exception is the ATCC® Breast Cancer Cell Panel, ATCC® No. 30-4500K. The 45 cell lines that comprise the Breast Cancer Cell Panel are packaged together in a kit box.
2The mutation data was obtained from the Sanger Institute Catalogue Of Somatic Mutations In Cancer web site, http://www.sanger.ac.uk/cosmic Bamford et al (2004) The COSMIC (Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer) database and website.
